It is also one of the steepest routes and extra care should be taken here to avoid problems with AMS. Walking up towards Mackinders Camp through the Teleki Valley offers superb views of the peaks of Batian and Nelion.

Day 1: Nairobi to Naro Moru

0800 Hours: Depart from Nairobi and drive to the cool slopes of Mount Kenya. Cross the Equator and arrive at Nanyuki town in time for Lunch.

Check-in at one of the lodges, relax and enjoy magnificent scenery of Mount Kenya region. You can enjoy a complimentary walking tour to the Equator. Overnight at a lodge in Nanyuki.

Day 2: Meteorological Station Camp Site (3 to 4 Hours walk)

Breakfast at the hotel followed by a photo session of Mount Kenya. Transfer to the gate then walk to the Meteorological Station. This is a very good day for acclimatization, for we will be sleeping at an altitude of 10,000 feet 9 kilometers.

Day 3: Mackinder’s Camp Site (4 to 6 hours walk)

From Met Station, we head uphill on the track and pass the radio mast on your right after about half an hour. The track turns into a path and after another 30 minutes you’ll reach the end of the forest belt and enter moorland.
This area is called the Vertical Bog; conditions range from them damp to the glutinous depending on when it last rained.
Wade through (or hop across tussocks) until the going gets easier and you reach a fork, overlooking then Teleki valley, about 3.5 Hours from Met Station.
After about 45 minutes you’ll eventually be at Mackinder’s Camp area (4200 meters).

Day 4: Mackinder’s Camp Site

0230 Hours: Wake up and have tea and biscuits, then depart at 0300 Hours to the summit which normally takes 3 hours walking, this section is rocky and frozen scree.
Continue walking until you get to point Lenana 4,985 Metres at 0630 Hours in the morning for the sunrise. Then descend down to Mackinders camp for breakfast.

Day 5: Meteorological Station – Park Gate – Nairobi

After breakfast at Met station walk down to Park Gate to catch your transport back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon.
